The standard multi-tiered white iced fruit cake with the little bride and groom on top is not for everyone. For one thing, not everybody likes fruit cake, but also the traditional reason for choosing it (it keeps for a really long time, and couples can save the top tier for their first baby's Christening) doesn't fit with a lot of modern couples who perhaps already have children, aren't planning to have children, wouldn't be planning to have a Christening for their baby anyway, or simply don't want to eat some really old cake.

The traditional wedding cake decoration style with the couple represented as figurines on top can also feel a bit dated to some, and doesn't necessarily look right with a more casual wedding or a wedding with a theme. If the bride walked down the aisle in black at her heavy metal themed wedding, that little bride in the white gown on the cake is just going to look like she doesn't belong!

If you are planning your wedding and want to have a wedding cake, but want something a little bit different, here are some interesting ideas:

Alternatives to Fruit Cake

If you don't like fruit cake, then simply think about what you do like! If you like red velvet cake, then consider that. Chocolate fudge? No reason why not. It is your wedding and as long as you both are happy with it, everybody else will be too – there are few types of cake nobody likes after all. If you want to choose something different like this as the “inside” of your cake, then there is still no reason why it can't be iced to look like a standard wedding cake, in fact the effect can be quite stunning when you take a slice out of an elegant looking, carefully decorated white wedding cake and inside is a bright fruit filling, or a marbled chocolate cake!

Some couples don't really like cake at all, and if you're not the sweet toothed type there are some fun ways you can keep the “centrepiece” feel of a wedding cake with a completely different type of food. Wedding cakes made of cheese (not cheesecakes, but actual wheels of cheese set up to look like a tiered cake) are becoming popular, and can be enjoyed with wafers and grapes like a normal cheeseboard. Displays of fruit can also look great, especially for a summer wedding or a wedding in a tropical location.

Alternative Decoration for Wedding Cakes

As with birthday cakes, the sky is basically the limit in terms of what a talented cake decorator can create. If you have an idea for something really spectacular, perhaps to fit with the theme or mood of your wedding or to represent something you both love, or how you met, then if you have the budget you should have no problem finding someone who can make it. A wedding cake that really stands out and suits the couple and the event can look like a complete work of art (although then people do feel a bit bad about cutting it up and eating it!).

If you don't want to go all out on the cake, however, there are simple ways to make even a plain supermarket bought wedding cake your own with decorations. Going back to those little figurines, many couples now choose to have alternative figures representing them on top of the cake. This can be something simple, like two of the same traditional bride or groom figures for a same sex wedding, or something outlandish – there is actually a huge range of different Lego people that are bought specifically for this purpose, so if you want to have Princess Leia marrying Doctor Who on top of your cake, there's nothing to stop you doing it!
