Cookies are one of the most popular treats all over the world, and no matter what country you go to, you’re likely to find some type of cookie they love to eat. Whether you just want to know more about cookies on an international level or you’d like to have an international cookie party, this quick guide can help you learn a bit more about which countries are known for certain types of cookies.

Australia: ANZAC biscuits are popular here. These are fairly sweet, shortbread type cookies. They’re made with oatmeal, coconuts, sugar, butter, and boiling water, among other things. Crunchy and crumbly, many soldiers fondly recall these during their days of service. Afghan biscuits are another fairly common cookie in this region. It’s made from cornflakes, as well as cocoa powder and butter. Fairly small, they often have chocolate icing on top as well as half of a walnut.

Germany: This is one country where you’ll find a variety of different cookies. One of the most popular ones is the Aachener Printen. All of the manufacturers of this cookie can be found right near the city of Aachen. History suggests, though, that they were first made in Belgium. More pastry than cookie, more than 4,500 tons of dough are produced for these every single year. They’re a bit like a firm gingerbread, but there are a number of different recipes including ones that have cinnamon, aniseed, and clove.

Berger cookies are also popular here. These are wafer cookies, rich in vanilla and butter. They’re usually topped with a thick chocolate. Lebkuchen is also a big name for Germany. It’s the country’s variation on gingerbread, and there are a number of different regional variations. You may also want to watch out for Springerle and Spritzgebäck, both Christmas treats in the country.

Netherlands: There are few countries around the world that create quite as many distinct cookies as this one, but here you’ll find some delicious choices. Stroopwafel is a waffle style cookie that is made from two very thin layers of baked batter. Inside you’ll find a carmel-style syrup that is delicious.

Speculaas is a Christmas favorite in the country, and inside you’ll find cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger. Pfeffernüsse is another great choice. It’s usually made during the holiday feast in early December. You may also want to be on the lookout for Jodenkoek, a flat, round shortbread that you’re certain to love.

UK: There’s some argument that this region invented the cookie, so here you’ll find lots of amazing treats. The Bath Oliver is made from flour, butter, yeast, and milk, and it’s typically enjoyed with cheese. The bourbon cream is two thin biscuit-style wafers. Inside you’ll find a chocolate filling that is light and creamy. Caramel shortbread is another favorite, particularly in Scotland.

There are layers of shortbread, caramel, and chocolate in every bite. The charcoal biscuit is another favorite. Powdered charcoal is mixed with flour, butter, sugar, and eggs. It’s usually enjoyed with cheese, but it was first made to cure any stomach troubles. Cornish fairings are equally as popular. They’re soft and chewy, with a strong ginger taste.

Italy: No cookie discussion would be complete without at least some mention of Italy’s contribution. Here you’ll find biscotti, a hard, almond-flavored biscuit. It’s usually served with vin santo in Italy, but around the world, it’s served with almost any warm drink. Cavalluci is another common choice from this area. It’s fairly chewy, and while the predominant flavor is anise, you’ll also find almonds, candied fruits, and honey inside each bite.
